Content: The Rorschach Technique is a widely used projective test that uses a standard set of 10 inkblots. Each inkblot has unique characteristics in terms of design, colour, shading, and texture. There are five black-and-white cards and five coloured cards.
The Rorschach aims to identify enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The test measures personality structure and dynamics, including cognitive, affective/emotional, ego functioning, defences, conflicts, and coping mechanisms. It is designed primarily for adults, although normative data is available for adolescents and children.
Administration of the Rorschach involves two phases: the association phase and the inquiry phase. The association phase requires 10-15 minutes and the inquiry portion requires another 20-30 minutes. Scoring and interpretation can take as long as 2 hours depending on the number and complexity of responses.
Scores are based on the examinee's response to the 10 inkblots.
The technique is useful in diagnosis and treatment planning for individuals with a wide variety of psychological problems and psychiatric disorders.
