The RPAB provides a preliminary assessment of a client's level of visual perceptual deficit. The degree of visual-perceptual deficit is calculated by comparing the client's visual-perceptual score with that which would be expected for someone of the same premorbid intelligence level. The client's premorbid level can be established by using such tests as the National Adult Reading Test.

The battery consists of 16 subtests:

  • Picture Matching
  • Right/Left Copying Shapes
  • Object Matching
  • Cube Copying
  • Size Recognition
  • Three-Dimensional Copying
  • Series
  • Cancellation
  • Missing Article
  • Figure-Ground Discrimination
  • Animal Halves
  • Sequencing-Pictures
  • Right/Left Copying Words
  • Body-Image Self-Identification
  • Body Image
  • Color Matching

The RPAB can be used following a stroke or head injury to assess a client's level of visual perceptual deficit, which plays an important role in determining rehabilitation therapy. The RPAB can also be used to measure the success of intervention or the effects of natural recovery.
